According to the BBC, a passenger vessel carrying 243 people lost contact while sailing in the Java Sea on the 13th. Indonesian search and rescue authorities report that six people have died, 107 have been rescued, and 130 remain missing; search and rescue operations are ongoing.
The missing vessel, named “Virgo Transport 8,” was carrying 213 passengers and 30 crew members. It was en route from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin, the capital of South Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo. The Banjarmasin search and rescue office stated that the vessel experienced communication failure during the voyage; its last known location was in the Java Sea, approximately 148 kilometers from a port in Banjarmasin. The BBC noted that the vessel last reported its position at 2:00 a.m. local time on the 13th.
